Botanical name: Tanacetum vulgare  or  Chrysanthemum vulgare  

Other species:  

Blue Tansy (Tanacetum annuum) 

 

Not to be confused with Tansy Ragwort/Stinging Willie (Jacobaea vulgaris syn. Senecio jacobaea) 

 

Family: Asteraceae (daisy)  

 

Historical Use: Tansy has been made into Tansy cakes, traditionally eating at Easter in medieval England.


Therapeutic Properties: 

Abortifacient: capable of inducing a miscarriage 

Antibiotic  

Anthelmintic: destroy or expel parasitic worms  

Emmenagogue: stimulates, regulates, and normalizes menstruation

Safety 

Tansy may be toxic when ingested because of its high levels of the chemical thujone. Deaths have been reported from the consumption of tansy.  

 

Tansy can cause contact dermatitis when applied topically.
