Botanical name: Carica papaya  

 

Family: Caricaceae  

 

Botany: Native to Mexico and northern South America  

 

Parts used: leaf, bark, root, seed, fruit  

 

Historical use: Used in Nigeria to treat diabetes, malaria and fungal infections.  

 

 

Phytochemistry   

Leaves contain tannin, saponin, alkaloid, flavonoid, and glycoside.  

 

Fruit contain papain and chymopapain enzymes.   

 

Seeds contains glucosinolates, tocopherols, carotenoids, and benzyl isothiocyanate.

  

Papain, an enzyme obtained through the latex, has proteolytic and esterase activities. Papain is taken alone or with other enzymes for digestive health, and used topically for its anti-inflammatory benefits.
