Kaolin Clay

Botanical name: Kaolinite 

Common names include kaolin clay, white clay, china clay, porcelain clay, hydrated aluminum silicate.  

 

  

Botany   

Kaolin is a white clay used in cosmetics and the production of porcelain. Sometimes the clay is pink or pale green in color, depending on other minerals present in the clay.   

 

Kaolin clay Naturally occurring clay mineral mined in China for centuries, but can be found in other areas on the world, such as Australia, and can also be synthesized in a lab.   

 

This clay has a lower absorption capability than other clays, like bentonite, and is the most gentle clay available. It is suitable for all skin types.

Absorbent  

Alkaline 

 

 

Uses 

Food additive as a binding and stabilizing agent.   

 

Skincare 

Treats excessive sebum production.  

Regular clay masks are beneficial for acne prone skin.  

Softens the skin, gently exfoliates.  

Is not drying to the skin like other clays  

A main ingredient in mineral makeup 

 

Digestive system  

Can be ingested for the treatment of diarrhea.

May be drying to the skin when used too often, but is otherwise a non-toxic, non-sensitizing ingredient. 

Safe external and internal use for children  

Likely safe to be ingested, although it may cause constipation.
