Jojoba

[This article contains information on medicinal herbalism, read our Medical Disclaimer here.]

Botanical name: Simmondsia chinensis

Common name: Jojoba oil or jojoba wax

Jojoba pronounced "ho-ho-bah"

Family Simmondsiaceae

Botany

Jojoba is a desert perennial shrub native to Arizona, California, and Mexico. The scrub produces a nut, which is pressed to extract the jojoba oil.

Jojoba oil is prized in skin care because it is very close in composition to our skin's natural sebum and is beneficial in the treatment of many skin conditions.

Jojoba oil is more expensive than other oils, such as sunflower, rice bran, and olive, because it is slow-growing and difficult to cultivate.

Unrefined jojoba oil is golden-yellow in color and has a slightly nutty scent, whereas, refined jojoba oil is colorless and odorless.

Jojoba oil has a high resistance to heat and oxidation, resulting in a longer shelf life.

Constituents:

Jojoba oil is indigestible, it is not recommended to ingest jojoba oil because of the content of erucic acid (about 12%) which appears to have toxic effects on the heart in large doses when digested.

The oil makes up 50% of the jojoba seed by weight.

Jojoba oil is similar in composition to the oil (sebum) out pores produce. Sebum supports the health and moisture levels on the skin and protects the skin from infection.
