French Green Clay

[This article contains information on medicinal herbalism, read our Medical Disclaimer here.]

Scientific name: Illite

Other names: Sea clay

Origin

The green color of the clay comes from iron oxide and the chlorophyll from decomposed plant matter like algae and kelp seaweed.

The more vibrant the color, the better the quality of the clay.

Called French Green Clay because it was once only derived from the coast of France. Since then, similar deposits of clay have been found in Montana, Wyoming, and China and products will be labeled as French Green Clay.

Historical use

Used in ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt to treat skin problems and digestive disorders.

It is believed to have a slight negative charge naturally that will pick up positively charged toxins.

French Green Clay is one of the most popular clays used in pelotherapy

Illite clays have been used successfully in water treatments to remove heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and chromium from industrial pollution.
